What We Carry
Family, Culture, and the Stories We InheritA 75-minute virtual workshop for Filipino American adults on what we inherited, what we want to keep, and what we choose to carry forward.

The holidays bring us back to family, and to everything we carry.
The gatherings. The questions. The roles we slip back into without noticing.
For many Filipino Americans, this season also brings up what we inherited. Ideas about responsibility, success, and belonging. Values like kapwa, utang na loob, and hiya that shaped us long before we had words for them.
These inheritances can hold deep meaning. They can also feel complicated, especially as we live between cultures and generations. Setting a boundary can feel healthy and disloyal at the same time.
You can love where you come from and still have a say in what you carry forward.
Can something be meaningful to us and still need to change?
The values we inherit often carry something precious. In a different setting, or a different generation, the same value can also become complicated.
In this workshop, we'll hold both: gratitude for what shaped us, and honesty about what it can cost.
- Kapwa offers a deep sense of shared humanity, and can make it hard to separate your needs from everyone else's.
- Utang na loob offers gratitude and reciprocity, and can leave you feeling indefinitely obligated.
- Hiya offers sensitivity and consideration for others, and can become a fear of judgment that keeps you quiet.
- Appreciating your parents' sacrifices while feeling the weight of their expectations.
- Wanting to belong without disappearing into a role.
These are possible experiences, not fixed definitions.
Often what needs to change isn't the value itself, but the way we've learned to live it.
Seventy-five minutes to notice what you carry.
Through brief teaching, guided reflection, and gentle body awareness, we'll explore how inherited messages live in Mind, Body, and Story: what we believe, how we respond, and who we learned we needed to be to belong.
Inherit
Reflect on the messages you grew up with about family, success, responsibility, and belonging.
Examine
Notice how the same value can carry different meanings, and what happens in your body when expectations pull.
Choose
Consider what you want to keep, what you might adapt, and what you're ready to hold more loosely.
Carry Forward
Leave with a simple practice, Notice, Pause, More Choice, to return to during family time this season.
You don't have to resolve anything in one morning. The invitation is simply to notice what you carry, and where you have a choice.
Register ↓You can take part without sharing your story.
This workshop is designed so you can reflect, notice, and leave with something meaningful without ever speaking about your own family. Cameras are optional. Sharing is always optional, and most reflection happens quietly on your own worksheet.
There is no single Filipino American experience. You're welcome whatever your generation, family history, language, or relationship to being Filipino.
The session will not be recorded. I'll ask everyone to keep what others share private, though in a group setting I can't guarantee confidentiality.
This is an educational and reflective workshop, not therapy. If you're looking for ongoing support, I'll share resources at the end.
Come as you are. You're welcome to simply listen, reflect, and take what's useful.
One morning, set aside to reflect before the holidays.
