Between Cultures
An 8-week therapy group for Filipino American adults exploring family, culture, identity, and what we choose to carry forward.
I'm Interested
You can love where you come from and still question what you inherited.
Maybe family has always mattered deeply to you. So has responsibility. Respect. Showing up. Making people proud.
And yet some of the expectations you grew up with may feel more complicated now.
You may find yourself caught between what your family expects and what you want. Between caring for other people and making room for yourself. Between values you genuinely want to carry forward and patterns you follow because doing otherwise brings guilt, anxiety, or the feeling that you are letting someone down.
You don't have to reject your culture to examine what it taught you.
The same behavior can carry very different meanings.
Setting a boundary can feel healthy in one context and disrespectful in another. Prioritizing yourself can feel necessary and selfish at the same time.
Caring for family can come from love, obligation, or both. Achievement can reflect ambition, responsibility, belonging, or the fear of disappointing people you love.
When you have learned to navigate more than one set of expectations, it may not always be obvious which values feel genuinely yours and which responses have simply become automatic.
- Wanting independence while still feeling responsible for family
- Setting a boundary and then feeling guilty for setting it
- Feeling proud of achievement while wondering how much of it is expected
- Caring deeply for others while having difficulty making room for yourself
- Wanting to honor where you come from without having to follow every expectation
The goal isn't to decide which set of values is right. It's to understand what shaped you well enough to recognize where you have choice.
Understanding what shaped you can create more room for choice.
The values, expectations, and roles we grow up with do not simply disappear when we become adults.
Over eight weeks, we'll explore what you learned about family, responsibility, achievement, belonging, and what it means to be a good person. We'll also pay attention to what happens when those expectations meet the life you are trying to build now.
Inherit
Explore the values, expectations, roles, and meanings you grew up with.
Adapt
Understand how you learned to belong, succeed, care for others, and navigate different worlds.
Notice
Recognize what happens when your needs or choices conflict with familiar expectations.
Choose
Consider what you want to carry forward, what you want to adapt, and where you may want something different.
The goal isn't to leave your culture behind. It's to have more choice in how you carry it forward.
You may not have to explain everything before you can be understood.
There can be something different about talking with people who recognize parts of the context without needing every part of it explained.
At the same time, there is no single Filipino American experience. Members may differ in generation, family history, immigration experience, religion, language, relationships, and what being Filipino means to them.
This is a small, closed therapy group. The same people will meet each week, giving the group time to build trust and explore both what feels familiar and where experiences differ.
Sessions will include guided reflection, conversation, and opportunities to notice patterns as they happen. You won't be expected to have the right answer, represent anyone else's experience, or share more than you're ready to share.
The shared culture brings us into the room. Your experience does not have to look like anyone else's.
A small group, with enough time to let the conversation unfold.
8 weeks
Meeting once each week.
105 minutes
Time for reflection, conversation, and group process.
Up to 6 people
A small, closed therapy group.
$600

The group will meet virtually. Dates and times for the first cohort will be determined based on interest. A brief individual consultation is required before enrollment to make sure the group is a good fit.
You don't have to decide yet.
I'm currently gathering interest for the first Between Cultures group.
Share your information below. Once dates and times begin taking shape, I'll reach out with more details. If the timing works for you, the next step will be a brief individual consultation to see whether the group is a good fit.
Expressing interest does not commit you to participating. Please don't include private clinical or health information in this form.
